Hot Chip Get Their DJ Kicks In

July 7th, 2007 by admin

(London, UK) - Hot Chip, those geek-funk masters with a knack for making tunes that make everybody smile, have mixed the latest DJ Kicks compilation. And who better to compile the latest in this ever-varied mix series than an act that have been described as, ‘Aphex Twin writing for Will Young’?

With Hot Chip, you never know what you’re going to get. Their Mercury-nominated second album The Warning taught us that back in 2006, as has their frenzied touring schedule and even their many DJ appearances. But those aren’t the only ways that Hit Chip are different from their peers – which other ‘indie’ band would be asked to compile their own DJ Kicks compilation?

The mix itself is a mish-mash of the tastes of regular DJ Felix Martin (Hot Chip’s drummer) and Alexis Taylor, the group’s frontman. Mr Martin brings the more electronic madness of Gabriel Anada’s Doppelwhipper and Dominik Eulberg’s Der Buchdrucker, while Taylor brings us hip-hop like Positive K’s I’ve Got A Man and crazy R’n'B like Um’s The Man’s Got Me Beat.

There’s also plenty of special stuff on here that no one else could bring us. Felix describes the aforementioned Um as someone who’s been, ‘labouring away in relative obscurity, "but he’s a maverick musician; a real influence on us. It’s nice for us to be able to put tracks like his and Grosvenor’s on this album.’ Grosvenor – the author of opening track Nitemoves –is former Chip drummer Rob Smoughton. And Larnak’s The Stone That The Builder Rejected is a lovely bit of micro house by… Al Doyle and Felix Martin of Hot Chip of course, who else? So just thrown in exclusive Chip track My Piano and you might just have another hit on your hands…or more accurately, on your speakers.
