Korg Announces New Gadget: Kaossilator
admin
(New York City, USA) - Various newssources on the Internet have made mention of the new Korg product, the Kaossilator dynamic phrase synthsizer. In fact the all new white and yellow device combines the power of a synthesizer with that of their existing line of Kaoss pads, which are devices tailored for live usage.
The battery powered device (no USB power here), has two axis, of which the horizontal is assigned to note/pitch, and the vercial one is assigned to cut off, feedback, and modulation. The machine combines different types of synthesis, catering to lovers of vintage synths, while also featuring sampled sounds, including instruments such as piano, guitar but also drums.
There is an arpeggiator, the usual loop function, synced to bpm of course, and there are 31 different scales built in, including major and minor, but also blues, pentatonic, among more exotic specimens.
Although the link of two machines into one is interesting, the potential in this devices probably lies in a more analogue setup. It is imaginable, that as the dawn of affordable touchscreens is upon us, functionality such as the kaoss pad may well be running from a software package, with a generic touchscreen serving as an interface.
Fact is, the Kaossilator is here now, and with its snazzy, sci fi looks, it might still be a nice widget for some extra frolicking. It is another step in the development of novel, non-traditional synthesis designs, perhaps not as revolutionary but in the line of Yamaha’s Tenori On hand held visual synthesizer.
